CAD Designer

 

Position

Gourdie Fraser is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Engineering Group as a Lead CAD Designer. Team members in this position develop design drawings using AutoCAD for the design and plan preparation of a wide variety of project types, including transportation, site engineering, municipal infrastructure, parks and recreation and more.  We are seeking individuals who are familiar with civil engineering design/CAD details and can work independently and with large project teams to develop accurate deliverables.

 

 

Education and Experience

 Minimum high school or technical school training with courses in computer-aided design and drafting and continuing course work in advances applications and add-ons to standard CAD software platforms. At least five (5) years of varied and complex computer-aided design/drafting experience on civil engineering projects.

  • Proficient with AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation is a plus
  • Two-year degree preferred, but not required
  • Michigan DOT and Local Agency project knowledge is a plus
  • General knowledge of engineering principles and materials

Responsibilities

Employees in this position will provide CAD design support within our Transportation and Site Development Team on a wide range of projects covering civil structures design with a focus site development including grading, stormwater and utilities and road networks including trails and bridges, retaining walls, dams, culvert structures, and miscellaneous projects. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilize MicroStation/AutoCAD to prepare engineering drawings consisting of standard structure sheets, structural details, and quantities
  • Develop a thorough understanding of materials, detailing, components, and the design process
  • Obtains work assignments of either specific design elements or CAD drafting from Designer or Project Manager with an allocated budget
  • Reviews all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submitting to Project Manager for review
  • Coordinates with outside utility companies and municipalities to gather required information necessary for design
  • Responsible for the preparation of grading and site plans compliant with local and state regulations and ordinances
  • Responsible for the design and creation of plans for water mains, sanitary sewers, and storm sewers
  • Preparation of storm water management calculations and plans
  • Preparation of transportation plans utilizing MDOT pay items
  • Perform and adjust quantity calculations for practical and budgetary purposes
  • Helps in the development of CAD drafting standards and procedures and uses these standard check lists to ensure quality control on each project
  • Performs quantity take offs for cost estimate development
  • Performs work as assigned from sketches, verbal instructions, and notes
  • Establishes and maintains schedules and provides progress reports
  • Attends regularly scheduled progress meetings with Project Managers, Client Managers, and Clients
  • Compiles data and performs dimensional and routine calculations required for the preparations of drawings
  • Assist with the training of new engineering personnel in the basics of the company CAD system and standards. 
  • Advise and assist CAD users with processes and methods.  Develops productivity tools.
